Insurance renewal notice periods: what to track
By Alex Renner · 18 October 2026
An insurance renewal looks like a single date on a schedule: the renewal date. In practice the decision usually has to be made earlier, because the policy or the broker requires notice before renewal, and because arranging replacement cover takes time. A team that tracks only the renewal date discovers the deadline after it has passed.
Why insurance renewals slip
Three things make them easy to miss. The policy may renew automatically unless notice is given. The notice window may be short, often measured in days rather than months. And the renewal correspondence may go to a broker or a shared inbox rather than to the person who owns the risk. None of these produces a dramatic failure; the policy simply renews, sometimes on changed terms or at a higher premium.
The renewal date is the start of the new policy period. The notice deadline is the last day on which the insurer or broker must receive whatever the policy requires to decline renewal or cancel. Between those two dates sits the window in which the decision is still possible.
Where the terms live
Renewal and cancellation mechanics are usually spread across the policy schedule, the policy wording and the broker's terms of business. Search for renewal, cancellation, notice, expiry and non-renewal, then record:
- The renewal date and the length of the new period.
- The notice period as written, including whether it is days, weeks or months.
- Who notice must be given to: insurer, broker or both.
- The permitted method and whether receipt is required.
- Whether the policy renews automatically if no notice is given.
- Any separate window for changes in risk, premium or terms.
The schedule often carries the dates while the wording carries the mechanics. Read both, and check the order of precedence if they disagree. A broker's terms of business may add an earlier deadline for instructions, which sits in front of the contractual notice period.
The dates to track
Track at least four dates. The renewal date anchors the policy period. The contractual notice deadline is the renewal date minus the notice period. The broker instruction deadline is earlier again if the broker requires instructions before it will act. The internal decision deadline is earlier still by however long your risk review and approval take.
An example makes the gap visible. A policy renews on 1 April 2027 and requires 30 days' notice of non-renewal. Counting back 30 calendar days gives 2 March 2027. If the broker asks for instructions five business days before that, the working deadline is around 23 February. A risk committee that meets monthly needs the paper in February, not March.
If the clause says one month rather than 30 days, the deadline is 1 March 2027, not 2 March. The one-day difference is the same trap as in any other contract: the written unit wins.
Renewal is also a commercial event, not only a date. The premium, the excess and the scope of cover can change at renewal, and a policy that renews automatically may do so on the insurer's current terms. That is why the decision deadline should sit early enough to compare alternatives and to correct any change in the risk before the new period starts.
Brokers and receipt
Where a broker manages the policy, establish who is responsible for serving notice and how receipt is evidenced. The insurer may accept notice only from the broker, or the broker may require instructions by a deadline earlier than the policy's. Record both deadlines and name the person who must act.
Check what happens if the policy renews and you then cancel. A mid-term cancellation right is not the same as a right to decline renewal, and it may carry a different notice period or a charge. The renewal window and the cancellation window are separate dates with separate consequences.
Insurance rules vary by jurisdiction and by policy type, and this guide is general information rather than legal or insurance advice. The policy wording and the broker's terms control; check your contract before relying on a date.
A policy tracking routine
Keep the schedule, the wording and the broker terms together, and record each date with its source. A short routine prevents most missed renewals:
- Record the renewal date, notice period, recipient and permitted method.
- Add the broker instruction deadline as its own date.
- Set reminders at the internal decision deadline and before the notice deadline.
- Confirm receipt, not just dispatch, and file the acknowledgement.
- Review the policy at renewal rather than only the premium.

Common questions
Do insurance policies renew automatically?
Many do, subject to the policy wording and the rules that apply. The schedule and wording say whether renewal is automatic and what notice is needed to decline it. Check the policy rather than assuming.
How much notice is needed to stop an insurance renewal?
There is no universal figure. Policies commonly use 7, 14 or 30 days, but the wording controls and some brokers impose an earlier instruction deadline. Record the contractual period and the broker's deadline separately.
Is notice to the broker the same as notice to the insurer?
Not necessarily. The policy may require notice to the insurer, to the broker, or to both. Check who is authorised to receive it and keep evidence of receipt.
Can I cancel after the policy renews?
That depends on the cancellation clause and the law that applies. A mid-term cancellation right may carry its own notice period or charge and is not the same as declining renewal. Check the wording.
Which date should I put on the tracker?
Track the notice deadline and the internal decision deadline, not just the renewal date. Add the broker instruction deadline if one applies, because it can fall earlier than the contractual deadline.
